Your Old Instagram Posts Might Already Be Working: Here's How to Check

A caption written years ago, for a completely different reason, might be earning search visibility today. Most practices have no idea which ones, or why.

Since Google began indexing public Instagram content from professional accounts, and Search Console added a way to track it directly, a new kind of question became answerable for the first time: which of your past posts are actually showing up in search results right now, without you realizing it. This is really about instagram search performance, and checking it takes a few minutes.

This entire opportunity can be compared to finding money already sitting in an account nobody remembered opening. A post from two or three years ago, written for an entirely different reason, might be earning clicks today without anyone noticing. Once you know which one(s) it is, there are real, practical applications to properly utilize that information to improve your marketing today.

What the Insights Report Shows You

Inside the Instagram platform property in Search Console, two reports matter most here. The Performance report lists impressions and clicks by individual post, along with the specific search queries responsible. Google's own announcement of the feature describes it as a way to see which posts and search terms are driving discovery, and the Insights report goes a step further, surfacing top performing posts and recent trends without needing to dig through the raw data manually.

Between the two, a pattern usually emerges fast: a small number of posts, often not the ones with the most likes or comments, are the ones actually earning search visibility. Search performance and social engagement are measuring two different things entirely.

How to Find Out What's Already Working

Open the Instagram property

In Search Console, select the Instagram platform property already connected, or add one following Google's setup instructions if this has not been done yet.

Check the Insights report first

This gives the fastest overview: top performing posts and how search traffic has trended recently, without needing to sort through every post individually.

Cross reference with Performance

Open the Performance report to see the exact search queries tied to each top post. This is often the most revealing part, since the actual words people searched rarely match assumptions about what the post was "about."

Note the outliers

Look specifically for older posts, six months or more, still earning impressions today. These are the ones you may want to start with.

What to Do With What You Find

Make More Like It

A post that is already earning search visibility is evidence, not a guess, of what resonates with people actively searching, as opposed to people already following the account. That is a genuinely different signal than likes or saves, and worth building a few more posts around the same topic or format.

Update It If It Needs Updating

A high performing older post may point to outdated information: a service no longer offered, a booking process that has since changed, or a link that no longer works. Since this post is actively being found, it is worth confirming everything in it still reflects the practice today.

Link to It From Elsewhere

A post already proven to attract search attention is a reasonable thing to reference from the website itself, a related blog post, or a newer Instagram post, since it is already doing measurable work.

Refresh the Alt Text

Older posts often predate any real attention to alt text. Since alt text is part of what search engines read, updating it on a post already earning impressions is a small, quick improvement with an outsized chance of mattering.

The goal here is to take guesswork out of your marketing decisions as much as possible. The free tools already covered for a stronger therapist visibility strategy apply here too. This post is basically an update on how an existing tool, in this case Search Console, can be pointed at a new source of data that did not exist to check just a year ago.
